What is Business Intelligence?
- Business Intelligence is the process of taking large
amounts of data (Data Ware House), analyzing that data, and presenting a
high-level set of reports that condense the essence of that data into the basis
of business actions, enabling management to make fundamental daily business
decisions.
- In
1989 Howard Dresner proposed “Business Intelligence" as an umbrella term
to describe "concepts and methods to improve business decision making by
using fact-based support systems.
Why Business Intelligence?
- To
handle the increasing amounts of data from an increasing range of sources like
ERP,SQL Server, Oracle and Flat Files.
- To
find out loop holes and take appropriate decisions to grow the Business.
- Enables
faster and fact-based decision making.
- Combines
multiple sources of data for decision making.
What is Raw Data?
- Raw
data is unprocessed computer data. This information may be stored in a file, or
may just be a collection of numbers and characters stored on somewhere in the
computer's hard disk.
- For
example, information entered into a database is often called raw data. The data
can either be entered by a user or generated by the computer itself. Because it
has not been processed by the computer in any way, it is considered to be
"raw data."
What is Information?
- Information
is data that has been given meaning by way of relational connection. This
"meaning" can be useful, but does not have to be. In computer
parlance, a relational database makes information from the data stored within
it.
What is Data Mart?
- The
data marts are areas of a database where the data is organized for user
queries, reporting and analysis.
- Small
Data Stores.
- More
manageable data sets.
- Targeted
to meet the needs of small groups within the organization.
- Small,
Single-Subject data warehouse subset that provides decision support to a small
group of people.
